The Hearse Song: A song for soldiers (1800’s ?)

Don’t you ever laugh as the hearse goes by,
For you may be the next to die.
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
From your head down to your feet.
They put you in a big black box
And cover you up with dirt and rocks.
And all goes well for about a week,
Until your coffin begins to leak.

And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The worms play pinochle on your scalp,
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose,
They eat the jelly between your toes.

A big green worm with rolling eyes
Crawls in your stomach and out your sides.
Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus comes out like whipping cream.
You spread it on a slice of bread,
And that’s what you eat when you are dead.

And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
They crawl all over your dirty snout.
Your chest caves in, your eyes pop out,
And your brain turns to sauerkraut.

They invite their friends and their friends too,
They all come down to chew on you.

And this is what it is to die,
I hope you had a nice goodbye.
Did you ever think as a hearse goes by,
That you may be the next to die?
And your eyes fall out, and your teeth decay,
And that is the end of a perfect day.

Eminem: Cleanin’ Out My Closet (The Eminem Show) (2002)

Music, lyrics and passion make this Eminem song incredibly powerful. I’d say enjoy, but that wouldn’t fit the mood of Eminem’s Cleanin’ out my Closet.

In a later song Headlights (The Marshall Mathers LP 2) Eminem apologizes (kind of). Clearly Eminem’s childhood was extremely difficult. However, Eminem has gone through healing processes and sees his childhood in the same but a different light.

Eminem has the kind of music and lyrics that appeal to me. A lot of the time listening to him hurts. Even when I disagree with him I still find myself listening (yes even this 50 year old lady).

Bradford, Owyn: “Get your exit letter, see what freedom’s done!”

A satirical look at belief by one of my friends

1) “If you want earrings count ’em one, two three,
if you want to wear no skivvies just like me,
if you want to drink a beer when the day is hot,
then a Godforsaken Mormon is what you are not.”

Chorus:

Count the restrictions, what you cannot do,
worse than a baconburger if you are a Jew,
give your money, do your tasks, wear a suit and tie,
or in the outer darkness you are gonna cry.

2) Don’t touch your little factory, don’t you date a black,
or from the good ol’ bishie you will take some flak,
Shouldn’t show your shoulders or go in the lake –
that’s the devil’s hangout, for goodness’ sake!

Chorus:

3) Funeral potatoes, oh my heck,
all that flippin’ stuff makes my hips a wreck!
Fast Sunday makes me hungry but what is worse
is kiddie testimonies, oh what a curse!

Chorus:

4) They stammer and they lisp that the chuwch is two
but it sure don’t cut the ice with me or you.
If you’ve had it up to here and “Enough!” you say,
than write that flippin’ letter and do it today!

Chorus:

5) They take our hard earned cash and they build a mall,
but if we are in need, who’re we to call?
There’s money for investments and for the Brethren too,
but there is nothing but frustration for me and you!

Chorus:

6) Count your aggravations, count them one by one,
then pack your bag, my friend, and prepare…to…run!
Count your aggravations, count them one by one,
then pack your bag, my friend, and prepare…to…run!

Weather Girls: It’s Raining Men

I heard this today and just felt energy course through me. Hope it gets its energy through to you as well.

Hi – Hi! We’re your Weather Girls – Ah-huh –
And have we got news for you – You better listen!
Get ready, all you lonely girls
and leave those umbrellas at home. – Alright! –

Humidity is rising – Barometer’s getting low
According to all sources, the street’s the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It’s gonna start raining men.

It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining Men! Amen!
I’m gonna go out to run and let myself get
Absolutely soaking wet!
It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah!
It’s Raining Men! Every Specimen!
Tall, blonde, dark and lean
Rough and tough and strong and mean

God bless Mother Nature, she’s a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining Men! Amen!
It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah!
It’s Raining Men! Ame———nnnn!

I feel stormy weather / Moving in about to begin
Hear the thunder / Don’t you lose your head
Rip off the roof and stay in bed

God bless Mother Nature, she’s a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It’s Raining Men! Yeah!

Humidity is rising – Barometer’s getting low
According to all sources, the street’s the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It’s gonna start raining men.

It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining Men! Amen!
It’s Raining Men! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining Men!

Coldplay: Viva la Vida: Death and All His Friends (2008)

Eugène_Delacroix_-_La_liberté_guidant_le_peuple
“La liberté guidant le peuple” by Eugène Delacroix (1830)
Cover of “Viva la Vida”
Sometimes I think I get all of my music likes from my husband and sons. Coldplay is no exception to that rule. My Linkin Park loving son introduced me to Coldplay as well. I loved them as well. There is something about intelligent lyrics set to great music that gets into my head. There also has to be a certain rhythm or vibe or something like that has to get into my head and massage my brain. That is what it kind of feels like when I fall in love with a band or composer or musically talented person. I used to think I could predict who and what would appeal to me but it seems to be completely unpredictable.

Thanks to Guy Berryman, Jon Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin for creating music that this old lady has fallen for.

I am including a couple of examples of why I like their lyrics so much. My absolute favorite track is:

42
Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living in my head
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well

Time is so short
And I’m sure
There must be something more

The words and rhythm come together in perfect harmony for me.

Next on the list comes:

Yes
When it started we had high hopes
Now my back’s on the line
My back’s on the ropes

When it started we were alright
But night makes a fool
Of us in daylight

There we were dying of frustration
Saying, “Lord lead me not into temptation”
But it’s not easy when she turns you on
Sin, stay gone

If you’d only if you’d only say yes
Whether you will’s anybody’s guess
God only God knows I’m trying my best
But I’m just so tired of this loneliness

One more, I just have to add one more:

Strawberry Swing
They were sitting
They were sitting on the strawberry swing
Every moment was so precious

They were sitting
They were talking under strawberry swing
Everybody was for fighting
Wouldn’t want to waste a thing

Cold, cold water bring me round
Now my feet won’t touch the ground
Cold, cold water what you say?
When it’s such, it’s such a perfect day
Such a perfect day

I remember we were walking up to strawberry swing
I can’t wait until the morning
Wouldn’t want to change a thing

People moving all the time
Inside a perfectly straight line
Don’t you wanna just curve away?
When it’s such, it’s such a perfect day
It’s such a perfect day

Williams, Robbie: Swing When You’re Winning (2001)

When the album was released in late 2001, it became an instant #1 hit in the United Kingdom, spending six consecutive weeks at #1. In Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, it reached the top 10, going on to sell over two million copies by the end of 2001 in the United Kingdom and over seven million copies worldwide (Wikipedia).

My parents are huge fans of this kind of music so I pretty much grew up with the people Robbie is covering. But my favorite song isn’t one of the oldies. Instead I Will Talk and Hollywood Will Listen by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers is the one I liked the best. After that Mr. Bojangles by Jerry Jeff Walker was the highlight of the album.

Robbie truly has great voice. His venture into jazz was a success in my opinion.

Kaizer’s Orchestra: Violeta Violeta Volume III

I belong to a huge group of people who enjoy the music by Kaizer’s Orchestra. This is a group that sings in Norwegian using the dialect they speak in Stavanger.

They started out in 2001 with their hit Ompa til du dør and are on their last tour right now. From the inception this has been a group for the fans. The critics have wanted to place them in some kind of category, but these guys have refused to stick to the script set for them by the know-it-alls. Now in 2013 their final Violeta Violeta album has come on the market with songs like Aldri Vodka Violeta.

Well worth a listen.

Linkin Park: Meteora (2003)

Linkin_Park-Meteora-Frontal

I know this is about music, but what the hey. Linkin Park have the ability to get into my head and hit my calming button. Chaos calms and this lovely sensation ensues. Books, music and math. Very few bands have that ability. In Linkin Park they have Mike Shinoda, Chester Bennington, Rob Bourdon, Brad Delson, Phoenix and Joe Hahn who in combination made a sound that brings peace. My poor dog isn’t happy when I play them, but she suffers through the noise.

I love their texts. All too often bands seem to have a low opinion of their target group’s intelligence. Linkin Park is different in that regard. I’m including a couple of examples from their album Meteora:

  • 3, Somewhere I belong
  • When this began
  • I had nothing to say
  • And I’d get lost in the nothingness inside of me
  • I was confused
  • And I let it all out to find/that I’m
  • Not the only one with these things in mind
  • Inside of me
  • But all the vacancy the words revealed
  • Is the only real thing I’ve got left to feel
  • 4. Lying from you
  • I remember what they taught to me
  • Remember condescending talk
  • Of who I ought to be
  • Remember listening to all of that
  • So I pretended up a person who was fitting in
  • And now you think this person
  • Really is me and I’m
  • (Trying to bend the truth)
  • But the more I push
  • The more I’m pulling away
  • 6. Easier to run
  • It’s easier to run
  • Replacing this pain with something numb
  • It’s so much easier to run
  • Than face all this pain here all alone.
  • Something has been taken
  • From deep inside of me
  • A secret I’ve kept locked away
  • No one can ever see
  • Wounds so deep they never show
  • They never go away
  • Like moving pictures in my head
  • For years and years they’ve played.

Anyways, I’m a fan and if you want to listen to a bunch of guys who describe different kinds of pain well – here they are.
